What is cashew milk?
Cashew milk is a popular non-dairy, plant-based drink made from cashews and water. Therefore, cashew milk is vegan and gluten-free.
It has a creamy, rich texture and is loaded with vitamins, minerals, healthy fats, and other beneficial plant compounds.
Cashew milk is an excellent replacement for cow’s milk in many recipes.
Cashew milk health benefits
Cashew milk offers an excellent alternative to dairy for those with lactose intolerance and dairy allergies. It serves as a lower-calorie alternative that delivers a creamier consistency than standard soy, rice, and almond-based offerings.
Cashew milk recipe
To make this homemade cashew milk, you only need 2 simple ingredients, and it’s ready in just under 5 minutes.
Ingredients for cashew milk
Here is what you’ll need to make your own cashew milk:
- 1 cup unsalted raw cashews (140g)
- 3–4 cups water (750ml – 1l), I used 4 cups (1l)
Instructions
Making homemade cashew milk is extremely simple and can be broken down into 3 steps:
- Soak the cashews overnight the night before.
- Drain and rinse the cashews, put them into a blender with 3-4 cups of water, and blend until well mixed.
- If you have a powerful blender and don’t mind if your milk is thicker, you can drink it just like that. If not, you can strain the milk using a cheesecloth, a strainer, a napkin, or a nut milk bag.
You can keep any leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge, and they’ll last for up to 4 days.
Additional tips
- You can also soak the cashews in hot water for 30 minutes before you start making the milk, but it’ll have a lighter texture if you soak the cashews all night long.
- It’s best to use raw and unsalted cashews. I wouldn’t recommend using salted or fried cashews.
- This recipe also works with any other nut to make another plant milk.
- To make the milk, use just 3 cups of water (750 ml), try it, and then add more water until you obtain the texture you’re looking for.
- You can also add some other ingredients like vanilla extract, cocoa powder, or sweeteners like maple syrup.
